Rena Koon

BGS, MEd, RCC and founder of Authentic Connection Counselling

Rena Koon is a Registered Clinical Counsellor and the founder of Authentic Connection Counselling in Prince George, BC. Guided by the belief that healing happens through genuine connection—with ourselves, others, and the world around us—Rena offers a compassionate, person-centered approach that honors each client’s unique story and inner strength.

Before becoming a counsellor, Rena spent many years as a teacher and school counsellor, an experience that deepened her understanding of the emotional challenges and pressures people face in both personal and professional settings. This background shaped her philosophy that connection, compassion, and authenticity are essential to healing and growth.

Rena’s counselling approach is trauma-informed and collaborative, integrating methods such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and Narrative Therapy. She also incorporates grief work, complex trauma support, and mind-body awareness to help clients process experiences and restore balance.

Rena works with adults navigating stress, anxiety, depression, grief, burnout, moral injury, and major life transitions. Her goal is to create a safe, supportive space where clients feel seen, understood, and empowered to reconnect with their authentic selves. Rena offers direct billing to Pacific Blue Cross, Green Shield, FNHA, ICBC, and CVAP for accessible, stress-free counselling.

Counselling under the supervision of Rena Koon, RCC

I hold space for people who feel overwhelmed, stretched thin, or disconnected from what they need. Many of the individuals I support are navigating burnout, self-doubt, anxiety, and the personal work of understanding who they are and how they want to move through the world. If you are feeling tired, pulled in many directions, or unsure how to come back to yourself, you are not alone.
For over a decade, my work as a teacher in inclusive and trauma-informed settings has shaped my understanding of resilience. I see resilience not as pushing through or becoming tougher, but as learning to listen inwardly with compassion and honesty.
I draw on multiple humanistic approaches, including person-centred, existential, and experiential work, as well as drawing on strategies from behavioural therapies such as CBT and DBT in ways that fit each client. My counselling style is steady, collaborative, and grounded in the belief that people’s experiences make sense when you understand their story.
Our work together is about understanding your story, noticing what matters, and taking steps toward a life that feels more connected and more your own..

About Authentic Connection Counselling

Authentic Connection Counselling was founded in 2021 by Rena Koon, a Registered Clinical Counsellor in Prince George, BC. After witnessing the profound isolation and mental health challenges that arose during the COVID-19 pandemic, Rena created Authentic Connection Counselling to help bridge the gap in accessible support. Many people needed help but couldn’t reach it—whether due to location, mobility, or other barriers. Authentic Connection Counselling was built on the belief that connection and healing should be available to everyone, no matter where they live.

Our work is guided by the belief that meaningful healing happens through connection—with ourselves, with others, and with the world around us. We believe every person holds an inner capacity for healing, and our role is to help uncover that strength through compassion, collaboration, and evidence-based care.

Grounded in the values of connection, compassion, and lifelong growth, we offer individual counselling for adults and teens using approaches such as EMDR, CBT, DBT, IFS, and nervous system regulation.

With flexible online sessions available anywhere in BC, plus evening and weekend appointments, direct billing (FNHA, CVAP, ICBC, Pacific Blue Cross, and Green Shield), and low cost options, Authentic Connection Counselling provides accessible, trauma-informed care—counselling where you need it, when you need it.
